From thigh-high side splits to knee-skimming box pleats. Micro minis, midis, and everything in between. Prada Spring/Summer 2027 was a study in the art of the skirt — a Miuccia Prada signature.
While skirts may date back to prehistoric times, this iconic Italian designer has been reshaping the way we think about the skirt since she first joined her family’s fashion house in the 1970s. And for Spring/Summer 2027, she and co-creative director Raf Simons reshaped the way that we think about a collection, too, by presenting SS27 through the lens of the skirt.
It was this particular garment that formed the focus of each individual look, drawing the eye with everything from rhinestone flowers to Velcro panels. ‘The collection stays within the particular form language of this specific skirt, as an exercise of exploration inside strict parameters, a frame for ceaseless creation,’ read Prada’s show notes. ‘At once autonomous and interdependent of the clothes around, its definitive graphic silhouette, linear and modernist, offers the single fixed parameter for projection of ideas.’
And Prada Spring/Summer 2027 was certainly brimming with ideas. As always, I loved the skilful Prada dance between the feminine and masculine. I was particularly fond of the floaty pleated skirts layered underneath oversized leather jackets. And the flippy little minis peeking out beneath bombers that looked borrowed from the men’s department. In the accessories department, I was obsessed with long handle handbags in boxy yet compact silhouettes, perfect for daytime into evening.
Of special mention were also pleated skirts paired with tailored blazers or lacy little bralets. And voluminous skirts styled with slouchy sweaters on top or form-fitting pencil skirts with gingham shirting peeking out the bottom. It was fertile ground for experimentation and the unbridled joy of personal expression. Evoking a place where utility meets romantic femininity and where each skirt silhouette can be totally transformed by the character of the woman wearing it.
For, the study of a skirt is really the study of a woman and few women have become so synonymous with this singular garment as Miuccia Prada herself.
